#FuturesTrades January 5th Friday 2007 Trade Log

#FuturesTrades is a private and free realtime trading posting chat room on the IRC Othernet server that allows traders from all over the world to communicate.

Click here for the instructions on gaining access to #FuturesTrades.

In addition, trades posted by members of #FuturesTrades in the below trade post chat log are by traders that do not have access to TheStrategyLab.com strategies except for NihabaAshi.

Fee-based clients of TheStrategyLab.com strategies use the private IRC rooms called #TheStrategyLab and #SwingTradingTSL.

Further, you'll find below the chat room time stamped text log of realtime trades (real money and simulator) that were posted by full-time, part-time traders from around the world and the timestamp is eastern standard time (est).

Also, below NihabaAshi's trading blog like comments, you can read the time stamped trades (prices, entries, exits et cetera) and market discussions that sometimes contains trading tips or insights that are more useful than what you will see at any other futures blog or chat room.

Trading Blog Below is not your traditional trader's blog in the usual blog format. However, you will find informative commentary on a few occasions as time permits and such will contain trading tips that should help your trading as I attempt to sum up my thoughts for the trading day.

Trading Perspective

Profit/Loss Statement

I got off to a horrible start to my trading day.

First of all, I missed the first critical 5 mins of price action after the Open due to personal reasons (related to the kids).

Next, I got greedy on a low volatility trading day and didn't take my profits when profitable resulting in losses by letting it retrace against me.

Anyways, my last 5 trades were accordingly to the trading plan and I quickly recover to have a good trading day.

Also, I was watching Gold, Oil and the EurUsd to help me get back into sync with the markets.

Today's results (real money and simulator trading) shown above are that of NihabaAshi only. To see his total accumulated points for the month of January...click here. To see results for the months of 2007 and prior years...click here.

Commentary by M.A. Perry (a.k.a. NihabaAshi)

Note: Each month there are a few trading days that we consider to involve interconnecting key price action of different markets and such is represented by a particular type of price action from one of the key markets. You can view the charts and their clues that's associated with the key price action at our key market archives.

Traders Accounting

As traders we must treat our trading like a business if we are to succeed as traders and as a business. Therefore, waiting till the last few weeks March to prepare for April's taxes is not good for your trading and could put extra stress on your trading during tax month or the months that follow if your one of those traders that filed an extension.. Therefore, its best to be on top of your taxes throughout the year and Traders Accounting is a great resource for such especially if you want to prevent penalties or an audit several years from now.

<RussellDaytrade> paper trade(s) EM... been trying to focus more on single trade entries lately, more representative of actual capacity... sure don't feel right.. nice trade EM
<NihabaAshi_away> Before I head out for brunch...11:13
Usually (90% of the time) when I recognize that volatility is low and at equilibrium = chop and poor trading conditions.11:14
I usually take quick profits when it presents itself as in 2-5 tick profits.
Today, I got a little greedy (not sure why) and let a few trades that went my way by 5 ticks...11:15
I let them retraced and take me out for losses.
Simply, I made a difficult trading day...10x harder when it shouldn't have been that day.11:16
<pat255> but it was tuff with up/down ...
<NihabaAshi_away> Stick to the trading plan of taking fast profits when trading low volatility conditions...
I didn't do that and my last trade this morning (Large size Short) bailed me out...11:17
I've already documented it as a "lucky" position size trade.
See all later.
<pat255> later niha

<ItalianSharp> lesson learned for today: try to quickly figure out which are the strong players in the market and prioritize trades in that direction...it is clear today that bears had full control of the market right from the start...and when this happens, there is no technical analysis that can bail you out...shorts win, longs lose11:22
<werner> hello all11:23
<pat255> IS the only prob i thot that mkt down might move up but they gave up..11:25
<Brutus> IS my TA said at 10:21 - I'm bearish as well. Looking for ES to do a DT or similar and downside to follow more towards the afternoon, So ES may break 1416.5 easily11:27
<ItalianSharp> pat: bulls tried hard to give the bears a good fight, thats why we were in a congestion for like an hour or so...but from the very beginning, with the market gapping down, bears were the stronger side...of course this doesnt rule out a possible rebound today...set 1 was won by the bears, lets see what happens later when bernanke speaks
<pat255> correct IS...11:28
<ItalianSharp> brutus: my technical analysis at 10.21 had already told me to stay out

as soon as the market gets into a bad chop, i am out and wait for some clearer charts

i hate to trade the chop...to me losing money on a chop is unacceptable11:29
<Brutus> I saw it as positioning for the down move IS, thats all.
<ItalianSharp> i mean, as soon as i recognize a chop is in place, i suspend trading...of course i can lose some trades while the chop is taking place11:30

brutus: i didnt mean to invalidate your reasoning...i am actually impressed you could see it coming

all i wanted to say is that as soon as we are chopping, i am not even bothering to figure out where we might be going next11:31

i just try to visualize possible scenarios for the breakout of each side of the chop
<Brutus> IS is was in regards to your comment of " no TA can bail you out"
<yvberj> Made up for the morning chop. Did everything wrong this AM. In the green now. Was very agravating.11:32
<eminitrader> good for u yb :))11:33
<ItalianSharp> brutus; all i wanted to say is that according to the type of trading style you use, its been a very tough market to trade today...when prices do not have any sort of continuation, you either operate out of higher timeframes or you are likely doomed to be chooped in and out of the market
<yvberj> The worst is when you know your wrong when you're making the trade and you do it anyway.11:34
<RussellDaytrade> whadya do wrong, and how did you correct it, YB?

good read on the downside this am Brut, nailed it.11:35
<yvberj> I was jumping into the trades too late and was holding too long. Gave back prof's. +.
<eminitrader> very true IS ...my reversal trade was based on a 30 min chart ...rarely do it but on days like these u r correct
<RussellDaytrade> yes, this am the trading was unusually 'tortured' in character, as i happen to describe it.11:36
<eminitrader> lol
<yvberj> Do you all use min. charts or range charts?11:37
<eminitrader> me personally min chatrs
<ItalianSharp> emini: yep, i just took a look at the higher timeframes and they speak very clearly...nevertheless, you msut have balls of steel to switch from 3min to 30min charts as your stops should get a lot bigger, right?
<yvberj> I'e always used min., but now begining to use range. Have been a little more comfortable with it.

Still using min. for additional confirmation.11:38
<eminitrader> not really IS ..stop would have been 4 ticks more than the regular ( on this trade ) ...but since u r going of a larger time frame ur profit loss rario also exceeds daily limits ...and most imp on days like these if u can't read the flow based on ur regular charts u have to switch to longer term charts11:40
<pat255> true emini ...your stop on es is 2 pts?11:41
<ItalianSharp> emini: ok, got you...you basically caught a good setup on a higher timeframe whose cost wasnt much higher than a regular trade on the regular smaller timeframe...with a higher risk/reward11:42
good eye to spot that emini
<eminitrader> yes pat ...avg stop is around 8 ticks

bingo ..u got it IS11:43
<pat255> ty emini ...when u get a chance just mention it lookig at htf ...
i never thot in that direction ..11:44
<eminitrader> ui have these on my monitors but dont stare at it all day ...quick glances once in a while...and take a look at it on my entries and to identify exits...on days like these it helps to have entries based on longer time frames...11:45
<pat255> good point emini ...will check that from now on ..11:46
<ItalianSharp> yep emini, much more reliable
<eminitrader> most imp u dont get chopped ...
u have ur entry and ur stop u just wait
<pat255> yes waiting is the hardest part in trading ...good discpline u have11:47
<eminitrader> trying to trade of smaller time frames on days like today -- niha had it right -difficult trading day...10x harder when it shouldn't have been that way11:48
<ItalianSharp> emini: the problem is that most of the times smaller timeframes help you get in at much better levels...and you never know what type of trading is until you have lost some11:54

the trick is to be able to recognize that immediately and shift to higher timeframes

the sooner you realize that, the more money you save

i personally am too unexperienced for higher timeframes...need to paper trade it first...hence, i'll just stop trading as soon as i realize i am trading a bitchy market11:55
