#FuturesTrades December 23rd Tuesday 2008 Trade Log

Trade Posting Chat Log Info: My name is M.A. Perry (a.k.a. online as NihabaAshi - martial arts & Japanese Candlestick term) and I am the moderator of #FuturesTrades.

Simply, my job is to keep the peace and ensure #FuturesTrades is a useful community of traders from around the world that have gather in a virtual trading office.

In addition, I personally use the below chat log as feedback for critical trading information that's not available when I review my broker statements nor any statistical analysis of my trading.  To maintain the usefulness of the below chat log, all of my trades were posted in real-time within 5 seconds after entry or exit unless otherwise noted in the log.

Further, although I'm not familiar with the trade methods used by most members of #FuturesTrades, I use a rule based methodology (very objective) that involves price action only trading (no indicators). However, some of my trades are intuition via market experience in combo with many concepts from my rule based methodology.

  My own current performance record and broker profit/loss statement is posted at the bottom of today's log.

With that said, today's trade posting chat log is below and it contains trades posted in real-time by #FuturesTrades members including all of my own trades that were posted in real-time.

Last of all, if you want the instructions for gaining access to our free #FuturesTrades chat room...click here.

Time Zone Info Chat Log below is eastern standard time (est.) - New York City, U.S.A and/or Montréal, Canada time zone.

<@X>  #FuturesTrades Info ->  No gurus, no head traders. Members use this room to document (trade journal) their trades and thoughts from one trade to the next trade because it provides critical information they can't get from broker statements nor statistics. Also, mimicking the trades by others is not recommended without their permission.

[10:29] <+szubaark> Buys ES @ 874 «« paper »»
[10:31] <@NihabaAshi> Covered ES Short @ 875.75 --> - 4.5
[10:31] <@NihabaAshi> Reverse and Enter Long ES @ 875.75
[10:31] <@NihabaAshi> correction
[10:31] <+szubaark> Volatility showed up out of nowehere on that Bounce
[10:31] <+szubaark> which it usually does
[10:31] <@NihabaAshi> covered 874.75 not 875.75
[10:32] <@NihabaAshi> Long @ 874.75
[10:32] <@NihabaAshi> Long ES @ 874.75 -> small size
[10:35] <+ItalianSharp> that was a nice spike
[10:35] <+ItalianSharp> this is what happens when the DOM is thin
[10:35] <+ItalianSharp> stop orders get blown out
[10:35] <+ItalianSharp> and market breaks thru all those thin levels
[10:36] <+szubaark> [10:01] > these are Perfect conditions for a slow, controlled creeper trend
[10:36] <+ItalianSharp> yes, the infamous christmas rally
[10:36] <+ItalianSharp> bad news has been doing nothing to the market
[10:36] <@NihabaAshi> It's been that way for +20 years during XMAS holiday trading...will be the same next year too.
[10:36] <+ItalianSharp> even today, market seems to ignore bad news
[10:36] <+ItalianSharp> niha, you expecting the same this year too?
[10:37] <+rickf_lurking> i'm loading up on SDS ETF on the short side to help cover my equiries going into 2009
[10:37] <+rickf_lurking> buying it down every 10 points or so
[10:37] <+ItalianSharp> vix dropped below 40
[10:38] <+rickf_lurking> it'll be over 50 again i'm sure
[10:38] <+ItalianSharp> yes, probably
[10:38] <+ItalianSharp> i am curious to see what happens when obama takes office
[10:38] <+szubaark> im glad its dropping, margins are high right now at IB
[10:38] <+ItalianSharp> true
[10:38] <+ItalianSharp> they should re-adjust them though
[10:39] <+rickf_lurking> vix hasn't any impact on margins directly does it?
[10:39] <+ItalianSharp> i think they adjust them on a monthly basis
[10:39] <+rickf_lurking> it's whatever CME decrees and the brokers build upon that
[10:39] <+rickf_lurking> right?
[10:39] <+ItalianSharp> rick, as far as i know CME takes the average daily range month by month
[10:39] <+ItalianSharp> and calculates margins off that
[10:39] <+rickf_lurking> true
[10:39] <+ItalianSharp> daily range has dropped dramatically in both november and especially december
[10:40] <+ItalianSharp> so we should see lower margins in january i believe
[10:40] <+ItalianSharp> unless some crazy volatility breaks in again
[10:40] <@NihabaAshi> Exited all ES Long @ 875.50 --> + 0.75
[10:41] <+szubaark> Tightening Stop
[10:42] <+szubaark> Exited all Long ES at 874.75 --> + 0.75 «« paper »»
[10:43] <+ItalianSharp> that upspike got retraced quickly
[10:43] <+jbuch> szu IB called me yesterday soliciting my business and quoted a margin requirement of 500/contract
[10:43] <+ItalianSharp> something not exactly bullish
[10:43] <@NihabaAshi> Shorts ES @ 874.25 -> large size
[10:43] <@NihabaAshi> 6 contracts
[10:43] <+szubaark> jbuch, for SPY or ES?
[10:44] <+jbuch> for es
[10:44] <+szubaark> ok
[10:44] <+rickf_lurking> hrm interesting - thought most brokers still had higher margins for es
[10:44] <+jbuch> i'm at like 2000 or 2500 at TS
[10:45] <+rickf_lurking> Though FWIW OEC's ES margin is less than its YM
[10:45] <+szubaark> actually let me Send REAL Order thru see what it says
[10:45] <+ItalianSharp> YM requires higher margin with TS also
[10:45] <+rickf_lurking> ES = 928 YM = 1031
[10:46] <+rickf_lurking> at OEC
[10:46] <+ItalianSharp> I think it's due to two factors: more volatile and less liquid...although tick value is less than 1/2 ES's
[10:46] <+rickf_lurking> more beginners trading the YM maybe?
[10:46] <+rickf_lurking> trying to protect them from blowing out too soon?
[10:46] <+rickf_lurking> lol
[10:46] <+ItalianSharp> yes, that's something I haven't considered yet it makes sense
[10:48] <@NihabaAshi> Covered all ES Short @ 875.25 --> - 1
[10:49] <@NihabaAshi> Shorts ES @ 875.75 -> large size
[10:49] <@NihabaAshi> 6 contracts
[10:53] <+jbuch> Shorts SPY @ 87.63 «« paper »»
[10:55] <+jbuch> Covered all SPY Short @ 87.64 --> - 0.01 «« paper »»
[10:58] <+szubaark> Shorts ES @ 873.50 «« paper »»
[11:02] <@NihabaAshi> Covered all ES Short @ 872.75 --> + 3
[11:02] <+szubaark> Covered all Short ES at 873.50 --> 0 «« paper »»
[11:03] <+szubaark> dont want the catch wrong end of the spike here
[11:06] <+szubaark> Shorts ES @ 872 «« paper »»
[11:06] <@NihabaAshi> Shorts ES @ 872.00 -> large size
[11:06] <@NihabaAshi> 6 contracts
[11:13] <+szubaark> exit stop moved to breakeven ES @ 872 «« paper »»
[11:14] <+szubaark> Covered all Short ES at 872 --> 0 «« paper »»
[11:15] <@NihabaAshi> Covered all ES Short @ 871.75 --> + 0.25
[11:16] <+szubaark> Shorts ES @ 870.75 «« paper »»
[11:18] <+szubaark> Covered all Short ES at 869.50 --> + 1.25 «« paper »»
[11:25] <+szubaark> Shorts ES @ 868 «« paper »»
[11:25] <@NihabaAshi> Shorts ES @ 868.25 -> large size
[11:26] <@NihabaAshi> 9 CONTRACTS
[11:27] <+szubaark> Covered all Short ES at 867 --> + 1 «« paper »»

[12:11] <+szubaark> Volatility showed up again out of nowehere
[12:14] <@NihabaAshi> Exited all ES Long @ 863.25 --> + 1
[12:14] <+jbuch> Long SPY @ 86.50 «« paper »»
[12:15] <@NihabaAshi> NihabaAshi_away
[12:16] <+szubaark> perfect time and place for some Brutal Chop
[12:16] * szubaark is now known as szubaark_away
[12:16] * NihabaAshi is now known as NihabaAshi_away
[12:19] <+jbuch> Exited 2/3 SPY Long @ 86.59 --> + 0.09 «« paper »»
[12:24] <+jbuch> Exited Remainder SPY Long @ 86.52 --> + 0.02 «« paper »»
[12:37] <+codehead> long 8407 stop 8389 Y< <paper> small
[12:37] <+codehead> wave target 8397 seeing if it holds
[12:38] <+codehead> first target only 8436, so not taking it for real
[12:39] <+codehead> this isn't the best wave, so no a sure thing, and there are lower targets
[12:40] <+jbuch> Long SPY @ 86.32 «« paper »»
[12:41] <+codehead> exit half +19 YM <paper>
[12:42] <+jbuch> Exited 2/3 SPY Long @ 86.42 --> + 0.1 «« paper »»
[12:45] <+codehead> i see 8488 max target on this leg of move, if it can continue
[12:45] <+codehead> tho two waves terminate 8436 and 8438, so may be tough
[12:46] <+codehead> got within 3 ticks, so possible that's done
[12:47] <+codehead> nope, targets hit at 8437
[12:47] <+codehead> 38
[12:52] <+jbuch> Exited Remainder SPY Long @ 86.53 --> + 0.21 «« paper »»
[12:52] <+codehead> 8452 is .500 bounce of the last leg down, so will be some resistance
[12:54] <+codehead> exit YM +38 remainder <paper>
[12:54] <+codehead> still would like to see that 8488
[12:55] <+codehead> would have to cross a couple fib levels tho, not a sure thing without retrace at least
[12:58] <+codehead> 8487 is .500 of today's hod to lod move, and 8488 is upside wave symmetry target, so that will likely terminate a move if it gets that far
[13:00] <+jbuch> Shorts SPY @ 86.5 «« paper »»
[13:04] <+jbuch> Covered 2/3 SPY Short @ 86.4 --> + 0.1 «« paper »»
[13:04] <+codehead> long 1c YM 8420 <paper>
[13:05] <+codehead> stop 8389 <paper>
[13:05] <+jbuch> Covered Remainder SPY Short @ 86.43 --> + 0.07 «« paper »»
[13:06] <+codehead> exit YM +13 <paper>
[13:06] <+codehead> just didn't want to manage it
[13:07] <+codehead> if it gets thru 8450 area, 8465 and 8488 targets
[13:10] <+codehead> volume pathetic on last two down moves
[13:11] <+codehead> that 39 point down bar on 5 min, to lod, was only 1286 contracts
[13:11] <+codehead> 724 on the dip to 8418
[13:15] <+codehead> prolly have some stops not above 8450
[13:16] <+codehead> 8448, 8449, 8447 tops
[13:22] <+codehead> bullish wedge on YM
[13:22] <+codehead> but top is holding
[13:23] <+codehead> another low volume pb

[13:35] <+rickf_lurking> yeah - since they worse than expected, kinda expected a plunge

[14:00] <+jbuch> actually entry filled at 86.66
[14:00] <+ItalianSharp> we are not out of the woods yet
[14:01] <+ItalianSharp> although we should rise further...this is a tough area for eminis
[14:05] <+jbuch> Exited Remainder SPY Long @ 86.76 --> + 0.12 «« paper »»
