#FuturesTrades December 18th Thursday 2008 Trade Log

Trade Posting Chat Log Info: My name is M.A. Perry (a.k.a. online as NihabaAshi - martial arts & Japanese Candlestick term) and I am the moderator of #FuturesTrades.

Simply, my job is to keep the peace and ensure #FuturesTrades is a useful community of traders from around the world that have gather in a virtual trading office.

In addition, I personally use the below chat log as feedback for critical trading information that's not available when I review my broker statements nor any statistical analysis of my trading.  To maintain the usefulness of the below chat log, all of my trades were posted in real-time within 5 seconds after entry or exit unless otherwise noted in the log.

Further, although I'm not familiar with the trade methods used by most members of #FuturesTrades, I use a rule based methodology (very objective) that involves price action only trading (no indicators). However, some of my trades are intuition via market experience in combo with many concepts from my rule based methodology.

My own current performance record and broker profit/loss statement is posted at the bottom of today's log.

With that said, today's trade posting chat log is below and it contains trades posted in real-time by #FuturesTrades members including all of my own trades that were posted in real-time.

Last of all, if you want the instructions for gaining access to our free #FuturesTrades chat room...click here.

Time Zone Info Chat Log below is eastern standard time (est.) - New York City, U.S.A and/or Montréal, Canada time zone.

<@X>  #FuturesTrades Info ->  No gurus, no head traders. Members use this room to document (trade journal) their trades and thoughts from one trade to the next trade because it provides critical information they can't get from broker statements nor statistics. Also, mimicking the trades by others is not recommended without their permission.

[09:52] <+silo> :D
[09:52] <+silo> it's time to test your manhood
[09:52] <+szubaark-away> 0,2 Covered all Short ES at 900 --> + 1 4,0 «« paper »»
[09:53] <+szubaark-away> im changing few things, due to the declining Vix
[09:53] <+pat255> OIl may see 35's today..oh my
[09:53] <+szubaark-away> basicly, you gonna see me more of a "scalper" now
[09:55] <+jbuch> why not trade 2 or three contracts and scalp portion and let the other portion run
[09:55] <@NihabaAshi> That works depending upon the platform being used.
[09:55] <+szubaark-away> i have Discipline problems when trading 2 contracts plus i need to be more consistant with 1
[09:56] <@NihabaAshi> Regardless...gotta have fast reaction skills to "change" your number of contracts on the exit in comparison to the number of contracts on the entry...
[09:56] <@NihabaAshi> Espeically when trying to SCALP.
[09:57] <+pat255> y szu i stick with 1 until i make consistent profits ..
[09:57] <+rickf> short es 900
[09:57] <+jbuch> I use a bracket order with multliple exits
[09:58] <@NihabaAshi> You can use bracket orders but that gets back to the platform capabilitiers.
[09:58] <+rickf> out 898.75 +1,25
[09:58] <+rickf> bad entry - near LOD
[09:59] <+rickf> didn't see the line :(
[09:59] <@NihabaAshi> However, bracket orders or any type of auto orders implies you'll be ignoring what's actually occurring in the price action and letting "fix numbers" determine your exits.
[09:59] <@NihabaAshi> That makes it difficult to catch big winners if that's the goal for the scale out.
[09:59] <+rickf> niha - very true .... i end up cancelling all the orders and running stops manually on runners
[10:00] <+rickf> lot of panic clicking to make sure i stay in the trade
[10:00] <@NihabaAshi> Yeah...I was about to get to that part...
[10:00] <+szubaark-away> with declining Vix runners are thing of the past
[10:00] <@NihabaAshi> Manually managing the remainder contracts after auto exiting the first set of contracts.
[10:00] <+pat255> & keep wide stop so u can manage it ...dang 2 pt sto eaisly taken
[10:00] <@NihabaAshi> This is something I learned fast with Infinity AT program.
[10:01] <+jbuch> I tend to try to move brackets to targets but it is frantic :)
[10:01] <@NihabaAshi> The auto trade management is a pain in the butt.
[10:01] <@NihabaAshi> Gotta have fighter jet reaction skills.
[10:01] <+rickf> for me - i use a 2.25pt target ... if i get 1.75 in my favor i will nix the bracket, put a stop at b/e, and then drag it up the dom to maintain a 2 point stop if i can. worst case i get out at b/e +1 tick but i don't give up a runner
[10:01] <+rickf> there are always exceptions - some markets you want to be hit-and-out
[10:02] <@NihabaAshi> Often I was taken out of a trade via the auto when I would have never done such via manually.
[10:02] <+rickf> all depends on the price action
[10:02] <+PapaJon> i found that nt's dom with multi targets/stops works quite easily and is very simple to adjust targets, etc while in a trade
[10:02] <@NihabaAshi> PapaJon...for day trading or for SCALPING ???
[10:02] <@NihabaAshi> Normal day trading is not an issue.
[10:02] <+PapaJon> either or.. doesnt mater
[10:03] <@NihabaAshi> It's the scalping...as in holding trades for seconds (no more than a minute or so).
[10:03] <+silo> OEC has the best function when it comes to this
[10:03] <+silo> just try their demo
[10:03] <+rickf> yep
[10:04] <+rickf> agree silo
[10:04] <@NihabaAshi> silo...how's scalping on brackets in OEC with real money ???
[10:04] <+silo> i do bracket orders all the time
[10:04] <@NihabaAshi> Scalping ?
[10:04] <+silo> each trade i go in with... i already have auto stops set in
[10:04] <+rickf> same here - no problems
[10:05] <+silo> what's the difference. it's just how fast you get out compare to regular trades
[10:05] <+PapaJon> yah.. is same with NT
[10:05] <+silo> i see no difference
[10:05] <@NihabaAshi> I didn't know you guys were scalping.
[10:05] <+rickf> oh no not scalping
[10:05] <+silo> it grabs real nice price since all i do is market orders most of the time
[10:05] <@NihabaAshi> I only know 2 scalpers in #FuturesTrades.
[10:05] <+rickf> i tend to always use brackets
[10:05] <@NihabaAshi> Both aren't here today.
[10:05] <+rickf> guess it depends what you define as 'scalping'
[10:06] <+silo> all i'm saying is.... oec's platform is very nicely setup.... i can have all the functions in one little dom... i dont have to check my pnl from another window.... i dont have to adjust things from another box
[10:06] <+rickf> to me, scalp = going for ticks, or a quick impulse play to catch a momentum
[10:06] <@NihabaAshi> Here's my definition of scalping (not fast trades)...
[10:06] <+silo> everything in one tiny dom
[10:06] <+silo> breakeven stop, buy/sell stop
[10:06] <+silo> cancel order
[10:06] <+silo> reverse
[10:06] <+silo> scale in scale out
[10:06] <@NihabaAshi> Special low commission rates due to high volume trading
[10:06] <@NihabaAshi> Most likely trading 50 - 250 roundtrips per day
[10:07] <@NihabaAshi> Average trade hold no more than 15 seconds.
[10:07] <+rickf> yeah - tick trading
[10:07] <+PapaJon> Thats a full time scalper
[10:07] <+rickf> that's not me
[10:07] <@NihabaAshi> Trading via tick charts or charts less than 1min intervals
[10:07] <+silo> you can try OEC yourself. i tried xtrader and oec, i went with oec becasue of its interface
[10:07] <+rickf> hey i use tick charts :)
[10:07] <+silo> its interface really just simplified a lot of things for you
[10:07] <+silo> everything is very convenient
[10:07] <@NihabaAshi> Anybody using charts 1min or higher and calling themselves a scalper...
[10:07] <+silo> rest is up to you to decide
[10:08] <+rickf> long es 904.25
[10:08] <@NihabaAshi> They aren't scalpers...they are just taking fast trades.
[10:10] <+rickf> out 905.50 +1,25
[10:11] <@NihabaAshi> I would (plan on it soon) to try true scalping...special rates, a hundred trades, holding trades no more than 15 seconds via auto bracket orders...
[10:11] <@NihabaAshi> Outside that...will stick to just taking fast trades when merited with the goal of trying to catch a big winner here and there.
[10:11] <+rickf> problem is you have to move a ton of contracts to be profitable at scalping, right?
[10:12] <+rickf> i mean 4-6 contracts for 2 ticks ain't much
[10:12] <@NihabaAshi> Special commission rates is a big issue for scalpers.
[10:12] <+rickf> agree
[10:12] <@NihabaAshi> The two scalpers I know are gettign special rates like $1.05 or something like that
[10:13] <+rickf> lol - are they CME members?
[10:13] <+pat255> wow
[10:13] <@NihabaAshi> One is.
[10:13] * szubaark-away is now known as szubaark
[10:13] <+rickf> OEC isn't too bad - $2.40 r/t
[10:13] <@NihabaAshi> One guys does about 250 roundtrips on a normal volatility day.
[10:14] <+rickf> WOW
[10:14] <@NihabaAshi> High volatility day he's around 400 roundtrips
[10:14] <@NihabaAshi> 20 trades for me is exhausting
[10:15] <@NihabaAshi> Reason why I don't think I can every be a scalper by defninition in comparison to the true scalpers I know.
[10:15] <+rickf> my best days were with no more than 6-8 trades
[10:16] <+szubaark> having daily trading $$ Goal helps unless one is greedy or just needs to trade ALL DAY
[10:16] <+silo> 0,4 Shorts YM @ 8812 4,0 «« paper »»
[10:17] <+rickf> i sort of have a $ goal per day -- but some days if you finish $50 in the green, I'm happy
[10:17] <+rickf> if i dont make that goal, or half of it, i took what the market offered
[10:18] <+rickf> chasing that goal = bad
[10:18] <+rickf> what matters is how i trade
[10:18] <+jbuch> I agree take what the market offers and try to trade well

[15:43] <+szubaark> I realized yersturday that after "tweaking" my method i completely lost the main idea and had my "counts" wrong
[15:43] <+jbuch> nice
[15:43] <+szubaark> I focused too much on the little things and not the main goal

[15:45] <+bazooka85> yeah i see that too szubaark
[15:46] <+bazooka85> but i dont use it to open a position, i use it to be careful getting false signals
[15:46] <+bazooka85> if i get a short signal and the price is currently sitting near 61.8 retracement level upwards, then i dont enter it in--example
[15:47] <+szubaark> well, its a lot of things not just Swings or Fibs, like Niha says "Its a Book with many chapters"

[15:59] <+rickf> oh
[15:59] <+rickf> i post my trades when/as i can
[15:59] <+rickf> trade first, post second
[15:59] <+rickf> if you're late, you're late
[16:00] <+rickf> there are times when i'll do things like --
[16:00] <+rickf> short es xxx.xx (normal trade, plenty of time to type)
[16:00] <+rickf> short es from xxx.xxx (after the fact, fast market, but you know i'm in)
[16:01] <+rickf> or in a real hurry, since i only trade the es, you might see "short xx.xxx"
[16:01] <+rickf> regulars here will know what i trade
[16:01] <+jbuch> thats good idea and then post after
[16:01] <+rickf> ALWAYS!
[16:02] <+jbuch> or for me once i get my brackets set
[16:02] <+rickf> whatever works
[16:02] <+jbuch> thnxs
[16:03] <+rickf> i think the only follks dying to know exact trades right away are folks trying to mirror trades

[16:04] <+bazooka85> but only on nihaba's trades :D
[16:04] <+jbuch> ya but I feel uncomfertable posting after the move has gone
[16:04] <+bazooka85> try to find out how he got his signals
