Note: The chat log below represents the free chat room called #FuturesTrades that's hosted by TheStrategyLab.com and any one can use the chat room to post their trades. Simply, we do not know what trading methods are being used by some members while others are using methods we ourselves don't use.

Our primary job in the chat room is to moderate the room (keep the peace) and to ensure it's a spam free chat room. More information about #FuturesTrades @ http://www.thestrategylab.com/FuturesTradesChatRoom.htm

In contrast, our fee-base clients are discussing market analysis or trade signals via concepts from our strategies in the private chat rooms called #VolatilityTradingTSL or #SwingTradingTSL.

Session Ident: #futurestrades
[09:14] * Now talking in #futurestrades
[09:14] <@X> [NihabaAshi] Announcement: The new trade posting script v3.7 (replaces v3.6) is posted at your forum in the "Announcements" thread.
[09:17] <ItalianSharp> gm all
[09:17] <rickf> gm
[09:29] <drt> gm everyone
[09:37] <TraderG> gm every 1. May The Trend Be With You.
[09:37] <jbuch> morning TG and everyone
[09:38] <+TraderG> yea ha jb
[09:48] <+TraderG> Anyone who says he can see through women is missing a lot.
[09:51] <pippyHolyGrail> :D
[09:52] <+jbuch> lol
[09:55] <+TraderG> the following is applicable to many traders - I worked myself up from nothing to a state of extreme poverty.
[09:57] * pippyHolyGrail is now known as silo
[09:58] <+rickf> short es 884
[10:00] <+drt> s es 85
[10:03] <+drt> cs es 84.25
[10:08] <@NihabaAshi> Good morning all
[10:08] <+rickf> short es 887 (add)
[10:12] <+rickf> out 86.50 -1 (late)
[10:15] * codehead_afk is now known as codehead
[10:18] <@NihabaAshi> Long ES @ 889.75 -> medium size
[10:18] <@NihabaAshi> 4 only
[10:18] <@NihabaAshi> intuition
[10:18] <+rickf> short es 890
[10:19] <@NihabaAshi> looking for only a few ticks at the minimum
[10:19] <@NihabaAshi> Exited all ES Long @ 890.25 --> + 0.5
[10:21] <@NihabaAshi> I've been doing that particular trade about 4 times per day and I finally have enough data that tells me it's only good for 2 - 3 tick profits on average.
[10:22] <@NihabaAshi> I've run into problems a lot when I don't take that profit involving that particular trade because my trigger to adjust my stop is usually around 4 - 6 ticks.
[10:25] <+rickf> out 889.75 +.25
[10:25] <+rickf> :(
[10:28] <@NihabaAshi> Simply, when using multipl strategies...may not be a good thing to apply the same trade management to all the strategies.
[10:28] <@NihabaAshi> Some strategies will require a different trade management.
[10:29] <@NihabaAshi> I actually notice this when I see people switching from one indicator to another fashionable indicator in their forum discussions (EliteTrader.com, Traderslaboratory, T2W et cetera)
[10:30] <@NihabaAshi> I notice their trade management (stops, trails, profit targeets) stayed the same.
[10:30] <+rickf> right on wrbtrader
[10:30] <+rickf> my stops/trails/targets depend on the market @ the time of the trade
[10:33] <@NihabaAshi> Agree.
[10:37] <+rickf> newbies tend to have that one-trick-pony trading mentality i think (me too, up until earlier this year)
[10:37] <+rickf> they emrace the science (ie indicators) as opposed to the art (ie s/r, trends, current conditions)
[10:37] <@X> #FuturesTrades Info -> Archived trade posting chat logs have a new location. They are now stored @ viewforum.php?f=20
[10:37] <@NihabaAshi> Yeah...it falls under the theme of "KISS" or keep it simple .
[10:38] <+rickf> i learned that lesson my first year of trading
[10:38] <@NihabaAshi> Everybody wants to keep it simple as much as possible but the market is too dynamic for such.
[10:38] <+rickf> "simple" to some = "1 indicator to tell me when to buy/sell"
[10:39] <@NihabaAshi> :)
[10:39] <@NihabaAshi> Yeah...that's usually how it goes in those forum discussions.
[10:39] <+rickf> i think the holy grail of trading is common sense
[10:39] <+rickf> no indicator can give you that
[10:41] <@NihabaAshi> Long ES @ 889.50 -> small size
[10:41] <@NihabaAshi> 3 only
[10:41] <@NihabaAshi> missed 889.00 while caught changing chart intervals
[10:44] <@NihabaAshi> Exited all ES Long @ 892.25 --> + 2.75
[10:49] <@NihabaAshi> Quiz Question - What reasons are there for a consistently profitable trader to not increase position size ?
[10:49] <@NihabaAshi> :)
[10:50] <+rickf> they don't feelk the need or want to
[10:50] <+ItalianSharp> psychological - acct size -
[10:50] <+jbuch> when the trader becomes fearfull ewith a larger size
[10:51] <@NihabaAshi> Yeah...all valid
[10:52] <+jbuch> I understand my answer well :))
[10:53] <@NihabaAshi> I've seen a few see their profits grow exponentially over some particular duration of consistent profits...
[10:54] <@NihabaAshi> Suddenly the growth stops or slows and they panick a little.
[10:55] <@NihabaAshi> They then try to compensate via "increasing their position size" via the conclusion that they are consistently profitable.
[10:55] <@NihabaAshi> In reality...
[10:55] <@NihabaAshi> They don't realize or ignore that the most likely reason why their profits have "slowed" is that something has changed in the market environment of the trading instruments they are trading.
[10:56] <@NihabaAshi> It's that "change" that will doom most that increase their position size.
[10:57] <@NihabaAshi> Thus, we need to first determine what's going on in the market and then ADAPT.
[10:57] <@NihabaAshi> When that has been resolved and profit levels start increasing again to their prior pace...
[10:58] <@NihabaAshi> That's when increase of position size will most likly have the most success.
[10:59] <@NihabaAshi> This year has been a MAJOR change in market conditions...
[10:59] <@NihabaAshi> Not the best time to be increasing position size especially if you haven't adapted.
[10:59] <+rickf> back in a bit -- want to discuss but have a meeting to run to :(
[11:00] <@NihabaAshi> Last year I had a big year in profits...very consistent...
[11:00] <@NihabaAshi> This year my profits have slowed but I did notice the change in market conditions.
[11:01] <@NihabaAshi> The original plan around February was to increase my overall position size.
[11:02] <@NihabaAshi> However, after the month of January...I notice the volatility was gone and a lot of chop and "pin ball like price actions".
[11:02] <@NihabaAshi> Whatever it was...it spooked me big time.
[11:02] <@NihabaAshi> Thus, I killed the notion of increasing my position size.
[11:02] <@NihabaAshi> Instead, I've gone in reverse...
[11:02] <@NihabaAshi> Decreased my average position size until I've fully adapted.
[11:03] <@NihabaAshi> I'm still adapting.
[11:04] <@NihabaAshi> Bailouts, TARPs, Global Economic Crisis, Hedge Funds yanking their money out of the markets...
[11:04] <@NihabaAshi> You name it...it changed trading conditions :(
[11:05] <@NihabaAshi> I'm expecting this type of trading conditions for the entire year of 2009.
[11:05] <@NihabaAshi> :(
[11:18] <+jbuch> uyg made a lower high
[11:20] <+ItalianSharp> what worries me is VIX
[11:20] <+ItalianSharp> yesterday's big rise in VIX must be taken seriously
[11:20] <codehead> vapo-rub? :-)
[11:22] <+codehead> i find VIX useless except under specific conditions
[11:22] <+codehead> remember, these days it is traded
[11:23] <+codehead> VIX is useful for confirming blow-off, major market bottoms
[11:23] <+codehead> that's about it
[11:23] <+ItalianSharp> well, the fact it bounced from below 27 to above 32 in a single day gets me real WARY
[11:24] <+ItalianSharp> its something to keep an eye on
[11:24] <+ItalianSharp> sorry...that bounce occured over 2 days
[11:25] <+codehead> well, maybe it has some use, but just remember that it's a traded entity these days
[11:25] <+jbuch> Shorts SPY @ 89.79
[11:25] <+codehead> so it's not a pure signal
[11:26] <+codehead> hm, throught it woudl touch 895, was looking to short
[11:26] <+codehead> got too picky
[11:26] <+codehead> i was short 895.00 during the night, placed order there at mkt close yesterday
[11:27] <+codehead> but only made a few ticks when price held a small range for a couple of hours, and i needed to go to bed and didn't want to have something to fret about
[11:28] <+codehead> hence i'm groggy today and took my eye off the ball here :-/
[11:28] <+codehead> was waiting for momo indicator to roll over
[11:28] <+codehead> above 896, will got to 900
[11:28] <+codehead> will go to
[11:30] <Nesi> hi all

[11:43] <@NihabaAshi> 2 only
[11:44] <@NihabaAshi> volatility declining slowly
[11:45] <@NihabaAshi> if it declines faster...I'm going to expect a volatility spike soon
[11:45] <@NihabaAshi> Hopefully the volatility spike takes price upwards instead of south
[11:46] <@NihabaAshi> tighten stop loss
[11:48] <@NihabaAshi> expecting a spike here soon
[11:48] <+Nesi> Covered all ES Short @ 892.50 --> - 1 «« simulator »»

[11:52] <@NihabaAshi> If I dont' understand what's going on as I did a minute ago...
[11:52] <@NihabaAshi> Best to bail out of the trade :(
[11:52] <+Nesi> when in doubt then there is no doubt :)
[11:53] <@NihabaAshi> Volatility spike southwards...
[11:53] <+jbuch> Shorts SPY @ 89.64

[12:23] <@NihabaAshi> Exited all ES Long @ 890.75 --> - 0.75
[12:26] <+jbuch> I have a question for the people who trade ES or YM live. if u have a resting order to enter a position above or below a range and there is a violent breakout do u typically still get the price that u were asking for or do u frequently have some slippage.
[12:27] <+Nesi> i usually get the price i want
[12:27] <+Nesi> some pressure coming in
[12:27] <@NihabaAshi> Shorts ES @ 890.00 -> small size
[12:27] <@NihabaAshi> 2 only
[12:28] <@NihabaAshi> intuition

[12:30] <@NihabaAshi> Be back later...deciding to take a break from trading.
[12:30] * NihabaAshi is now known as NihabaAshi_away
[12:31] <+jbuch> financials made a higher low
[12:32] <+jbuch> but pretty much just flat on the day so don't think it means much
[12:35] <fcb98292> Short ES 889.25.
[12:43] <@X> #FuturesTrades Info -> Archived trade posting chat logs have a new location. They are now stored @ viewforum.php?f=20

[12:59] <+rickf> well this town is now on holiday mode
[12:59] <+fcb98292> yes
[13:07] <+Nesi> Shorts ES @ 892.50 «« simulator »»
[13:17] <+ItalianSharp> looks like someone left early for the long weekend
[13:17] <+ItalianSharp> i am calling it a day, week too
[13:17] <+ItalianSharp> will sit and watch
[13:18] <+rickf> hey IS how is your short guy doing
[13:19] <+ItalianSharp> still playing golf
[13:19] <+ItalianSharp> he called me the other day
[13:19] <+ItalianSharp> he said he's feeling a lot better about his short
[13:19] <+ItalianSharp> he's short over 100 ES cars
[13:19] <+ItalianSharp> average price low 800s
[13:19] <+rickf> eeek
[13:20] <+ItalianSharp> he was like 25pts away from blowout
[13:20] <+rickf> wow
[13:20] <+ItalianSharp> if he gets away with it...
[13:20] <+ItalianSharp> he'll call it quits forever
[13:20] <+ItalianSharp> that's what he said
[13:20] <+rickf> i can't see myself running more than 10 contracts
[13:21] <+rickf> ever
[13:21] <+ItalianSharp> well, this guy is a little crazy...the fact that he's playing golf for 6-8 hrs a day IGNORING the markets must tell you something
[13:21] <+rickf> indeed he must have $$$ to spare
[13:22] <+rickf> that's lottery playing imho
[13:22] <+ItalianSharp> well, he started off with 50K
[13:22] <+ItalianSharp> took that to 1M
[13:22] <+ItalianSharp> kept increasing size
[13:22] <+ItalianSharp> he never lost any of his swing trades because he kept averaging up/down
[13:22] <+ItalianSharp> been working for 10yrs
[13:23] <+ItalianSharp> maybe this is the time he'll give it all back
[13:23] <+rickf> that's nuts imho ;)
[13:24] <+ItalianSharp> no matter what happens, he's some crazy mother...er
[13:24] <+ItalianSharp> :)
[13:24] <+ItalianSharp> a gambler i would say
[13:24] <+ItalianSharp> there is no skill in adding to a losing position
[13:24] <+ItalianSharp> anyone can do it
[13:24] <+ItalianSharp> as long as volatility doesnt blow you out...you are good
[13:25] <+ItalianSharp> but that one time when the market takes off without looking back, you are dead meat
[13:25] <+rickf> you said it .... that black swan event
[13:25] <+ItalianSharp> right
[13:25] <+TraderG> Here's to our girlfriends and wives; may they never meet!
[13:25] <+ItalianSharp> it may take 10yrs...but it will happen eventually
[13:25] <+jbuch> exactly
[13:25] <+TraderG> ???
[13:26] <+ItalianSharp> traderG: why is that?
[13:26] <+TraderG> why is what?
[13:26] <+jbuch> to the blackswan event
[13:26] <+TraderG> I love Black swans :)
[13:26] <+TraderG> as some of u know
[13:26] <+ItalianSharp> <TraderG> Here's to our girlfriends and wives; may they never meet!
[13:27] <+ItalianSharp> dont get that part
[13:27] <+TraderG> just something funny I read
[13:27] <+ItalianSharp> oh ok
[13:27] <+ItalianSharp> never mind then
[13:27] <+ItalianSharp> looks like we are slowly crawling to test HOD
[13:27] <+TraderG> it's a toast for the wives and girlfriends
[13:28] <+TraderG> but it is not a good idea if the two meet eachother
[13:28] <+ItalianSharp> i think bernanke is scheduled to speak at 2pm
[13:28] <+ItalianSharp> maybe that's what the market is waiting for
[13:28] <+TraderG> i think the market is not waiting
[13:29] <+TraderG> IT IS
[13:29] <+TraderG> it does what it does and no one can tell why
[13:29] <+ItalianSharp> i can tell why
[13:29] <+ItalianSharp> :)
[13:30] <+TraderG> u r a smarter dude then I am
[13:30] <+ItalianSharp> not really
[13:30] <+ItalianSharp> its simpler than you think
[13:30] <+ItalianSharp> when it goes up, there are more eager buyers than sellers...very simple
[13:30] <+TraderG> i could not tell u with certainty if my life depended on it
[13:30] <+ItalianSharp> reverse teh concept for when it goes down
[13:30] <+ItalianSharp> :)
[13:30] <+TraderG> actually i disaggree
[13:31] <+TraderG> the number of buyers has to match the sellers
[13:31] <+ItalianSharp> right
[13:31] <+ItalianSharp> in fact, i said EAGER buyers
[13:31] <+TraderG> it is just that the buyers are willing to pay a higher price
[13:31] <+ItalianSharp> yep
[13:31] <+ItalianSharp> read my statement carefully
[13:32] <+TraderG> u said MORE EAGER BUYERS and that is incorrect
[13:32] <+ItalianSharp> more eager buyers than eager sellers
[13:33] <+TraderG> the number of EAGER buyers probably equals the number of NOT SO EAGER sellers except that the buyers are willing 2 pay a higher price
[13:33] <+ItalianSharp> yes
[13:33] <+ItalianSharp> that's a good way to say it
[13:34] <+ItalianSharp> eager buyers matched up with patient sellers
[13:34] <+TraderG> so it is NOT THE NUMBER OF buyers or sellers but their conviction that counts
[13:34] <+ItalianSharp> yes...the word EAGER wasnt used randomly
[13:34] <+ItalianSharp> :)
[13:36] <+TraderG> u win
[13:37] <+ItalianSharp> nobody is supposed to win
[13:37] <+ItalianSharp> its an exchange of ideas, and i believe we agreed
[13:37] <+TraderG> u still win
[13:37] <+TraderG> :)
[13:39] <+TraderG> The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made.
[13:49] <+TraderG> funny how a few jokes quiet every1 :(
[13:52] <+Nesi> Covered all ES Short @ 891.50 --> + 1 «« simulator »»
[13:55] <+TraderG> Finally, in conclusion, let me say just this.

[14:20] <+drt> been hearing yr checks are bouncing
[14:21] <+drt> :)
[14:21] <+TraderG> :( no 1 was supposed 2 know that
[14:21] <+ItalianSharp> tick tock...bulls knocking at the door
[14:22] <+TraderG> Bernanke just said that he is not going to talk about the market
[14:22] <+drt> cl es 92
[14:22] <+TraderG> he is talking in some business school
[14:22] <+ItalianSharp> boston college i think
[14:23] <+fcb98292> Stopped.
[14:25] <+ItalianSharp> traderG, whats your bias for the closing hr? rally, selloff, chop?
[14:25] <+TraderG> i have no clue
[14:25] <+TraderG> sorry
[14:26] <+TraderG> i look at each bar and ask myself that question
[14:27] <+TraderG> this way i don't get stuck in any bias
[14:28] <+TraderG> also i don't want 2 sound like the guys on CNBC that I sometimes use as a contrary indicator.
[14:28] <+TraderG> look @ this chat room
[14:29] <+TraderG> when most here go long the market goes down and vise versa
[14:29] <+TraderG> sometimes i don't look at the chat window for hours not to get a bias.
[14:30] <+TraderG> and that is the SHORT answer :)
[14:30] <+MK> Long ES @ 892.25 «« paper »»
