A few traders recently asked me via private message and email to explain the difference between a trader sharing his/her method online versus that same trader being a Mentor.

I basically replied by saying the following...

Mentoring and sharing strategies are not the same and many traders get these two education resources of trading mixed up.

First of all proper mentoring can only be done in person via the mentors own trading account in front of the student's own two eyes.

If the above does not occur, it is not mentoring but just a trader sharing with you his/her approach to profitable trading regardless if its for free or via a fee.

More information about proper mentoring and explanation of a good mentor/student relationship at the below link.

Simply, if you are looking for mentoring and not just trying to gain access to the strategies (entry signals) used by a profitable trader...we highly recommend you read the information at the above link to prevent any problems.

However, if you are not looking for a mentor, you are basically saying you can figure things out on your own and you just need a good starting point.

This is the reason why some traders purchase our strategies because they need a good starting point along with a little guidance if needed.

Further, what typically happens after we share our profitable trade methodology with you along with responding to any of your questions about trading or your strategies...

You'll become independent by nature and would rather figure out the rest of the puzzle on our own to maintain that independence.

Simply, the trader has returned back to self-taught education and gives truth to the statement that trading can't be taught...it must be learned in situations where there's only strategy sharing and no in person mentoring.

With that said...as mentioned above...mentoring should only be done in person and during actual trading from the mentor's trading account until the mentor believes the student has learned enough to be able to trade from his/her own account with the mentor guiding each step of the way.

Just as important, mentor and student should be using same broker, same charting program, trading the same trading instruments, trading the same position size ratio, similar computer workstation setup et cetera.

What is meant by position size ratio is that if for example the mentor is trading 9 contracts and scaling out of his/her position in 1/3...

The student can't be a 1 contract trader nor trading anything less than a 3 three contract position.

The above about what a mentor should be doing versus a trader that only shares his method (strategy) will increase the odds dramatically that a mentored student will be a profitable student and that there's a solid foundation for a mentor/student to be able to continue the learning process successfully via follow-up online communication.

Why ???

The mentor and the student are on the same level because the student has the same trading tools being used by the mentor to allow the student a fighting chance to achieve similar like trading results as the mentor.

What about learning how to trade on your own via trial-n-error (self-taught)?

First of all, we highly recommend you try self-taught education prior to purchasing anything from any vendor (books, classes, video courses, mentoring, black box systems et cetera).

Set a designated time period for yourself to achieve profitability.

When that time period arrives and you've exhausted yourself of trying to figure things out on your own...that's when you should start purchasing education material.

Just remember this...learning from ones own mistakes can be costly and more often than not will put you out of the trading business long before anyone can help you.

Remember this...that the failure rate (losing all or part of your account) is over 87% via a trial-n-error or self-taught trading methodology.

Simply, few traders become profitable via the self-taught method.

Sincerely,

M.A. Perry and Associates
