#FuturesTrades January 11th Thursday 2007 Trade Log

#FuturesTrades is a private and free realtime trading posting chat room on the IRC Othernet server that allows traders from all over the world to communicate.

Click here for the instructions on gaining access to #FuturesTrades.

In addition, trades posted by members of #FuturesTrades in the below trade post chat log are by traders that do not have access to TheStrategyLab.com strategies except for NihabaAshi.

Fee-based clients of TheStrategyLab.com strategies use the private IRC rooms called #TheStrategyLab and #SwingTradingTSL.

Further, you'll find below the chat room time stamped text log of realtime trades (real money and simulator) that were posted by full-time, part-time traders from around the world and the timestamp is eastern standard time (est).

Also, below NihabaAshi's trading blog like comments, you can read the time stamped trades (prices, entries, exits et cetera) and market discussions that sometimes contains trading tips or insights that are more useful than what you will see at any other futures blog or chat room.

Trading Blog Below is not your traditional trader's blog in the usual blog format. However, you will find informative commentary on a few occasions as time permits and such will contain trading tips that should help your trading as I attempt to sum up my thoughts for the trading day.

Trading Perspective

Profit/Loss Statement

Great trading day because I reached to profit target goals concerning the dollar amount and the WRB pt3 level exit on a single trade.

In fact, usually I stop trading for the day when either one is reached.

Today I did one trade only and called it quits afterwards so I can take a long nap (sleep) to catch up on some sleep.

You should also read the trade log below about volatility analysis between 15:30pm - 15:42pm est and compare it to your ER2 chart.

It's that type of analysis that has improved my trading dramatically over the past year and someone a few weeks ago called it something else.

I'll review my notes and post the different name for volatility analysis just in case your able to better research it via a different name.

As a reminder, don't forget to join our new discussion forum because soon I'll be deleting the old ezboard forum.

Today's results (real money and simulator trading) shown above are that of NihabaAshi only. To see his total accumulated points for the month of January...click here. To see results for the months of 2007 and prior years...click here.

Commentary by M.A. Perry (a.k.a. NihabaAshi)

Note: Each month there are a few trading days that we consider to involve interconnecting key price action of different markets and such is represented by a particular type of price action from one of the key markets. You can view the charts and their clues that's associated with the key price action at our key market archives.

<RussellDaytrade> nice trade Brut
<Brutus> HOM?
<RussellDaytrade> i am thinking so, may have some more 'hangtime' then lately, due to market having been fairly oversold for a couple three days, etc, getting traction from declining oil.10:20
<venedom> good press BR
<RussellDaytrade> i got 791 or so in another 30-40 min10:21
<Brutus> 2nd time AJ has left with a trade open10:23

They saved all the ER bullets from yeserday for this :)
<szubaark> Now probobly killer chop til 2pm Treasury Budget10:24
<RussellDaytrade> retest setting up 792.7 as a pivot for lower price when 792.7 is breached10:26

hopefully.

did you pile onto that moving train up this am Brut?10:27
<Brutus> Only what I typed although last add was 794.8 on the fill10:28
<RussellDaytrade> ok, just expecting to see you do a trend-type trade one of these days, (rootin for ya)10:29

small size, of course, 1 lot for starters10:30
<Brutus> I did yesterday -0.6 :(
<RussellDaytrade> thats good Brut, you took the step, the ground will be firmer next time.10:31
<Brutus> True, very true
<RussellDaytrade> shorted an nq this am at 1842.75 for small gain, mostly just to help work off the 10 order threshold requirement for comp platform fees for Tradestation10:34
<Brutus> Notice how on NQ the run was small compared to the ER and ES. I bit of equalisation from yesterday10:36
<RussellDaytrade> yeah, er made up the difference, and then some, note also how when you pointed it out, it was two against one, (nq and es against er) and the 'two' won. those conditions may not set up often, but at sometime, they will again, and likely works both ways.10:41
<PapaJon> Anyone here ever make use of the put/call ratio composite?
seems to be quite fortelling.. but i have not done very much research on this.10:43
<Brutus> The ER long from the open was the best trade to take after 4 days of consolidation with 785 being the resistance10:44
<PapaJon> yah think? :)
if only i had a proper signal for the long entry10:45
i had a partial signal bout half way up
then only one proper one around 791.40'ish10:46
<Brutus> PJ we are trying to for a trend following support group, to many counter trend traders here :)10:48

for = form
<PapaJon> well.. i am a trend trader and a reversal trader10:49
so.. i guess i would be a "counter-inteligence" guy..
lol
<Brutus> Excellent, the best to be. Would like to see you post some trades...10:50
<PapaJon> perhaps for catching the trend.. you may want to take a gander at the put/call ratio composite
i used to brut...
<Brutus> How quickly does it update
<PapaJon> but it totally distracts me
i think it depends on the charting youhave10:51
<Brutus> I know what you mean :)
<PapaJon> normally it updates on the minute i believe on esignal.. but
once in a while.. the intraday chart is blank.. like today...
only the daily chart shows.. b10:52
<Brutus> Do you know the esig symbol
<PapaJon> but.. even the daily seem to say that we may go UP UP UP
$pc-st
they had an article bout it a week or so ago...
was kinda interesting
perhaps i can find it for you...10:53
<Brutus> OK thanks, ES short to mid lunch looks tempting
<PapaJon> as penance for not posting my trades.. hehe
perhaps i could post my trades at the end o day... kinda like jperl used to do10:54
* codehead_afk is now known as codehead
<Brutus> If you like PJ, I would be interested :)
<PapaJon> in which?10:55
<Brutus> YOu trades at EOD
<PapaJon> ok10:56

i can do that

<Brutus> thx
<PapaJon> yw
<Brutus>  Shorts ES @ 1432.75 11:01
Covered ES Short @ 1432.25 --> + 0.5 11:06
at the high :)
Covered ES Short @ 1434.25 --> - 1.5 11:07
with that trade, the ES ice is broken :)11:08
<RussellDaytrade>  Shorts ER2 @ 795.7 -> Add «« paper »»
<Brutus>  Shorts ER2 @ 795.5 11:10
Dax up almost 2%11:11
Covered ER2 Short @ 795.8 --> - 0.3 11:12
<PapaJon> Brutus... you mentioned " trend following support group, to many counter trend traders here"... you trades seem to be more countertrend style...???11:13
<RussellDaytrade> model sez down 2.90 in 51 minutes from highs, may either take longer and or not fully manifest.
<PapaJon> just curious what you mean by "trend following"11:14
<Brutus> Thats right PJ want to do more trend trades :)
<PapaJon> damn.. missed my entry
<RussellDaytrade> is there any sound reasoning for market to climb more this am?
<PapaJon> everybody is happy?11:15

hehe

maybe oil prices?

dunno

just try to trade the charts11:16
<NihabaAshi> Still going upwards...wow.
We get at least one of these types of movement per month.
<Brutus> Looks like a top here RD :) HOM11:17
<RussellDaytrade> seems like enough for now, latent buildup from those 3 days of 'rest'.11:19
flatted another nq for 'comp-credit'. (short)
think er sees 793 now that the thugs in chicago have satisfied them selves in building up, and taking out the buy-cover stops at/above 795.11:22
Brut, recall conversation from yesterday, targets not fulfilling cuz market is rqamping or dropping a bunch, and then , after not fulfilling for a few targets, targets then begin to fulfill again, etc. we may be at /near that dynamic about now.11:25
<Brutus> Yes true, increase position size with each one11:26
<RussellDaytrade> Brut, you got a copy of 'New Market Wizards'/11:29
<Brutus> yes will give it to you at lunch ;)11:30
<RussellDaytrade> got one, thx, just want to call attention to something, that i beleive is/just occured...11:31
<Brutus> ok shoot
<RussellDaytrade> k, just a sec, gotta look it up, easy concept to uderstand, occurs often...11:32
<Brutus> That was a good ER trade to pile onto, was thinking to much about protecting profits :(11:33
<venedom> rus read your comm on Vzla late yesterday 0% of my investmnet in Caracas stock
<Brutus> I think SPX will close above 1% today imo11:37
<RussellDaytrade> V, may as well let the dust settle there, and reassess your options, best of luck, the process of repatriaztion may be still in the early stages and have more events before its over, you'll likely sense value and or opportunity when you see it, in the same sense that you may sense trouble or danger...11:40
taking a little longer to find passages in book, carry on, will report back in several minutes.11:41
<venedom> got disconected as happens in underdevelop countries sorry rus if you wrote something11:45
<ItalianSharp> anyone has 1 minute to answer one question?11:53
<Brutus> ?11:54
<RussellDaytrade> ok, sorry that took so long, should highlight them for easier reference...pg 156, second paragragh, Monroe Trout interview, he speficallly states, that when he was intrested in moving larger size, he would deliberately 'goose' the market with his own buy orders, to generate increased interest, and better activity into which to liquidate into...11:55
<ItalianSharp> i recently decided to move 50% of my funds to a different broker's account
<RussellDaytrade> the whole interview is great, packed with info...11:56
<ItalianSharp> this futures broker offers much more competitive commissions as opposed to my current broker, which is a clearing house by the way

i intend to use the "cheaper" broker for my daytrading, and keeping the "expensive" broker as a backup
<RussellDaytrade> the reason icall attention to it, is that this am, on that last move up, i believe that the tactics and dynamics he describes, are exactly what was/did occur, and, that it occurs with frequent regularity.11:57
<ItalianSharp> my current broker, the "expensive" one, before transfering parts of my funds to the other broker, just said:

we have over $500M funds in segragated accounts, while the other broker only has $50M...remember this...11:58

my question is:

as far as I know, when your funds are segragated, they are safe...so this should have nothing to do with the amount of clients funds a broker holds in segragated accounts right?11:59

i mean, the fact that broker A holds over $500M in seg. accounts doesnt make it "safer" than broker B holding $50M in segragated accounts right?12:00

keep in mind that broker A is currently charging me $7.00 R/T while broker B will charge me $4.25 R/T using the same platform12:01

my feeling is that broker A is pissed about me moving half of my funds to another broker

hence, broker A is a thief and wants to scare the hell out of me to keep my money deposited there12:02
<RussellDaytrade> may depend on the ratio's of total funds each has in accounts...
<ItalianSharp> what do you mean russell? all i want to know is: are my funds less "safe" if deposited at the cheaper broker?12:03
<pat255> very imp IS12:04
<RussellDaytrade> theoritically, should all be in segregated accounts, but after Refco fiasco, and in reading the language in most account applications, does give one cause to wonder, perhaps the answer is to spread accounts around over even more than 2 brokers.12:05
<ItalianSharp> russell: the refco fiasco affected the refcofx accounts...and i believe lots of customers lost 70% of their funds because their money was deposited in unregulated accounts...i even read some of the clients funds were depsited in the bahamas islands....12:07
futures accounts, by law, are segragated and thus SAFE
<pat255> c u all later ...ty all12:08
<X>  #FuturesTrades Info -> Chat room for realtime trade posting by traders of Emini Futures (ER2, ES, NQ, YM), EuroFX Futures (EC), Eurex Derivatives (DAX, ESTX50), Euronext Futures (FTSE100, CAC40), Treasury Futures (ZF, ZN, ZB), NYMEX Futures (CL, NG, HO, QM) and Exchange Traded Funds (DIA, GLD, IWM, OIH, QQQQ, SPY)12:09
<RussellDaytrade> there wwas some crooked activity that took place there... when recently opening an account with IB, the language in their applications have inserted that they may, at their discretion, move funds from a segregated account into 'other', too scary to contemplate, so i took a drink, and completed application.12:10

TardeStation, which uses R J Obrien as their brokers /clearing, seens to be a little more upfront about noting that a customer's funds are in a segregated account. i felt a little more at ease with the language in their app's....12:14

they all seem to have a 'bailout' clause, where if the firm gets into dire straits, they may 'reappropriate' funds under 'management'.12:16
<Brutus> A nice old article from Linda BR http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dgckst qh_0fczbmp12:17
<RussellDaytrade> dang, missed my BE exit.
<szubaark> slow, controlled upcreep12:59
<RussellDaytrade>  Covered all ER2 Short @ 792.6 --> + 1.8 «« paper »» 13:12

sell too early, buy too early, waht the heck.
<Brutus> Crude $52.713:13
<RussellDaytrade> i see long term support for oil... at 30!13:14
<X>  #FuturesTrades Info -> Chat room for realtime trade posting by traders of Emini Futures (ER2, ES, NQ, YM), EuroFX Futures (EC), Eurex Derivatives (DAX, ESTX50), Euronext Futures (FTSE100, CAC40), Treasury Futures (ZF, ZN, ZB), NYMEX Futures (CL, NG, HO, QM) and Exchange Traded Funds (DIA, GLD, IWM, OIH, QQQQ, SPY)13:18
<RussellDaytrade> i traded that oil future a couple times back in the fall, it's worth 500 bucks apoint per contract.

i think its even higher leverage dollarwise relative to er, since the margin requirements per contract are about the same, as i recall.13:22
<Brutus> After ES'slack of pullback at lunch could mean a afternoon breakdown13:23
Then LOD would be min ES target, need more confirmation13:24
<RussellDaytrade> todays action first instance of similar bear-market-type rally i've seen since that string of silialr days in early Dec leading into option ex., nothing slow or creepy about it.13:25
<Brutus> Whats your view on the afternoon RD13:26
<RussellDaytrade> i dunno today Brut, haven't got a strong read on it at the moment. last strong 'instinct' was yesterday midday or so when it seemed market would rally off of oil down, etc. that played itself out. feel its more likely to have more giveback, challenge stops at 790 at least, or come close to it first go-round, to threaten them a little... you got a read?13:29
<Brutus> No, either a HOD breakout for a uptrend day (likely) or the breakdown. Either one should give some crumbs for late comers13:32
Options ex...hoping to do well next week13:38
<RussellDaytrade> seems too far away from highs to make that much ground back up today, es and nq hanging around closer to their highs like yesterday...maybe today er reels them in!13:39

hey, you calle dthat pretty well, did some good trades, and then stepped in front of the moving kangaroo!13:41
<codehead> crude big volume as it tries to hold up this area13:42
trying for bounce13:43
<PapaJon> almost had a short entry during this low volatility pause.. it didnt quite trigger13:44
<RussellDaytrade> you do another 3 lot scale in today on them shorts?13:45
<PapaJon> RD.. are you talking to me?13:46
<RussellDaytrade> was asking Brut PJ. what signal do you look for...state the time of the most recent exmaple or nearest-appearing exmaple on todays action, so i can view it on chart and get a feel for your preferences.13:48
you say you almost got a signal on the short trade,etc.13:49
<PapaJon> well. actually did get the signal.. but a signal and trigger are two dif things13:50
<RussellDaytrade> breakdown from lower level of support zone??13:51
<PapaJon> in this particular situation, the characteristic of the recent pullback was the signal

crap.. just missed a diff signal

argh

sec13:52

current entry should have been at the open of the previous candle at 10:50

sorry 1:50

just playing that 790 holds first time, will sell 789.914:03

potential up target 3.5 in 45 or so, if holds14:05

i guess it can potentially go down more too!

Exited all ER2 Long @ 789.9 --> - 0.4 «« paper »» 14:06

Long ER2 @ 789 «« paper »» 14:11
<codehead> ecbot down?14:14
<szubaark> yup Again :((
<codehead> man oil nuts, did a couple scalps of QM, rarely trade it
<RussellDaytrade> wonder if (when) we'll hear about "Amaranth II' 'the oil patch trade'. fer sure somebody's gonna get clobbered in that oil long trade, and when the news gets made public, will likely swoon markets on the news of 'threatening to bring down d=some finacial house/counterparty risk' blah. blah, blah. coming soon to a market near you!14:19

likely going on now, probably why it going down so much so fast, flor traders piling on to press the challenged party(ies)14:21

Exited all ER2 Long @ 788.9 --> - 0.1 «« paper »»

should be public any day, or even any minute14:22

may not want to be long oil in front of it14:23
<Brutus> hope Apex did not scale into it14:24
<RussellDaytrade> yeah, been wondering about Apex, he quited down a bit on ET, hope he's alright, he awas sure invested in the sprit of a long trade/sound bottom on oil.14:25

got sahken out of all them longs, vasilating between periods of stronger conviction and little conviction, swinging from one end of the spectrum to the other.14:28

<RussellDaytrade> i'll be ddarned, market bottomed coincident in time with the terminus of a long trendline i drew about 3 hours ago, about 70 cents lower then my projections. right to the minute on the time factor.14:31
<NihabaAshi> I just got back from a long needed nap (sleep)...14:49
Anybody lose their CBOT info ???
<asuni> y14:50
<NihabaAshi> Ok...thanks.

<NihabaAshi> Yep...it just pop up on my monitor like a pop tart :)15:05
<ItalianSharp> nice gap on YM

those who were short during the breakdown must have found a nice surprise15:06
<codehead> omg i shorted YM above the hod a/h, after cash close... it sat there and wham--instant 27 tick pop--someone had a fat stop in place that hit
ended up taking a 10 tick loss
but was down 30 momentarily
MSFt went thru 30.50 on huge volume, been years since it's been this high15:07
<RussellDaytrade>  Covered all ER2 Short @ 791.8 --> + 0.9 «« paper »» 15:21
<ItalianSharp> niha, can you look at ST room please...i asked you a question a while ago15:22
<PapaJon> Well.. today I had a ton of distractions and had to leave for bit midday. I only took one trade. Nothing to get excited about.15:24

my stats show that there were 10 valid signals... to bad i dint catch em.. only two of them failed15:25

here's my humungous trade.

http://www.veritashomeinspection.com/pj2 .jpg

I have to head out to the jobsite now... so...

will cya all tomorrow.. have a great evening.
<codehead> YM closed that gap formt eh ecbot outage15:26
* PapaJon is now known as PapaJon_afk15:27
<NihabaAshi> I just got a bullish signal in ER2 @ a price of 792.60 and if I was still trading...wouldn't pay more than 792.80 for it.15:30
Being that I'm lazy today...would try to still an entry around 792.30 within the next 2mins.15:32
Volatility is shrinking...expecting a volatility spike here soon.15:39

Traders Accounting

As traders we must treat our trading like a business if we are to succeed as traders and as a business. Therefore, waiting till the last few weeks March to prepare for April's taxes is not good for your trading and could put extra stress on your trading during tax month or the months that follow if your one of those traders that filed an extension.. Therefore, its best to be on top of your taxes throughout the year and Traders Accounting is a great resource for such especially if you want to prevent penalties or an audit several years from now.
