#FuturesTrades January 9th Tuesday 2007 Trade Log

#FuturesTrades is a private and free realtime trading posting chat room on the IRC Othernet server that allows traders from all over the world to communicate.

Click here for the instructions on gaining access to #FuturesTrades.

In addition, trades posted by members of #FuturesTrades in the below trade post chat log are by traders that do not have access to TheStrategyLab.com strategies except for NihabaAshi.

Fee-based clients of TheStrategyLab.com strategies use the private IRC rooms called #TheStrategyLab and #SwingTradingTSL.

Further, you'll find below the chat room time stamped text log of realtime trades (real money and simulator) that were posted by full-time, part-time traders from around the world and the timestamp is eastern standard time (est).

Also, below NihabaAshi's trading blog like comments, you can read the time stamped trades (prices, entries, exits et cetera) and market discussions that sometimes contains trading tips or insights that are more useful than what you will see at any other futures blog or chat room.

Trading Blog Below is not your traditional trader's blog in the usual blog format. However, you will find informative commentary on a few occasions as time permits and such will contain trading tips that should help your trading as I attempt to sum up my thoughts for the trading day.

Trading Perspective

Profit/Loss Statement

Today I didn't let trades reach their profit potential and as a result I got a lot of profitable trades that were less than 1 point per contract.

The reason for such a trading plan is due to the fact I'm on heavy pain killers because of a partial root canal performed yesterday evening and that will continue this evening at another dental appointment.

Simply, I was under no condition to sit here and try to establish a position trade to hold for their normal duration.

Today's results (real money and simulator trading) shown above are that of NihabaAshi only. To see his total accumulated points for the month of January...click here. To see results for the months of 2007 and prior years...click here.

Commentary by M.A. Perry (a.k.a. NihabaAshi)
intradaystrategies@yahoo.com

Note: Each month there are a few trading days that we consider to involve interconnecting key price action of different markets and such is represented by a particular type of price action from one of the key markets. You can view the charts and their clues that's associated with the key price action at our key market archives.

<eminitrader> quick Q anyone...what index does the ER mirror...ex; ES and NQ pretty much move in the same direction..10:57
<RussellDaytrade> i htink the nq is the most-closest EM.
<ItalianSharp> ER2 mirrors midcap usually10:58
<eminitrader> thx rd just wondering
<RussellDaytrade> on a percent-basis
<PapaJon> er2 doesnt play well with others...
<eminitrader> so its basically on its own then ?
<pat255> yes it is a wild beast ..
<PapaJon> has lots of psychological issues
<eminitrader> :))

nq that way today10:59
<pat255> better be good at reversing or else it will be a bad experience ..
<PapaJon> havent looked at the correlation to midcap.. is may be correct..

i dunno
<eminitrader> got it thx
<PapaJon> is = italiansharp11:00
<eminitrader> IS - any midcap index we can follow ?
<RussellDaytrade> nq stronger today, i keep a line chart with both in the background for quick reference, er is 'usually' more dynamic, but every once in a while, nq takes a flyer.11:01
<ItalianSharp> emini: i follow the MC future usually, i dont have an index for it nor an ETF
<eminitrader> excatly there is a lot more down vol on the ES but nq is holding it up so far

thx IS ..whats the symbol11:02
<ItalianSharp> here at esignal is MC
<eminitrader> and does it give an edge to trade the ER

is it like the s7p midcap11:03
<PapaJon> hmmf... er2 is very divergent with mc right now
<NihabaAshi> The S&P 400 MidCap is one of those Eminis that has different symbols depending upon the broker or charting program (MC, EDM, MDC et cetera)
<Brutus> EMT try $MID on esignal11:04
<ItalianSharp> well, lets say its good to look at for divergences...however, i think the trick is to understand which US index is the leader at any given day...up until a couple of weeks ago, it was the DOW that led everyone else up...
<eminitrader> thx B...trying it on trade stat
k its from the nyse
<NihabaAshi> I've never understood why all these brokers and charting programs use different symbol terminology in comparison to the actual exchange symbol especailly when they are getting the data from the exchange.
<ItalianSharp> papjon: yes, we do have some divergence now...but i wouldnt look into it as very important...today is another messed up day
* codehead_afk is now known as codehead11:05
<PapaJon> agree IS... today is wacked
<venedom>  Shorts ER2 @ 780.30
<eminitrader> ti think we have seen the highs for today
<RussellDaytrade> EM, recently, i am viewing the differences between er nq and es like this, (and one can add their own values to it) the er = 1, and the nq = .35, and the es = .57. these values relate specifically to the percent/volatility-weighted 'normal' price moves of each, relative to the er...
<PapaJon> none the less... still some money to be made
<ItalianSharp> i believe we are in the middle of a consolidation...and its no coincidence we are having this at the beginning of 2007...i am starting to get the feeling the institutionals are slowly jumping on the short side after the record highs from late last year11:06
<NihabaAshi>  Shorts ER2 @ 779.80 -> small size
<ItalianSharp> in fact, what i have noticed recently is that my short trades tend to be a lot smoohter as opposed to my long trades
<Brutus> I have a bearish bias today and think the HOD may be in.
<RussellDaytrade> so, if i want to trade an er, i get 'full' volatility, if i want to trade a 'half a contract' equivalent, i may trade the es, and if wanting even less volatility, (dollar-wise), i can trade the nq.11:07
<ItalianSharp> today i had to enter a long 4 times before making some profit...i was always kicked out of it...while my only short went pretty smooth
<pat255> IS what stop u use on er?
<NihabaAshi>  Covered ER2 Short @ 780.20 --> - 0.4
Reverse and Enter Long ER2 @ 780.20
<venedom>  Covered all ER2 Short @ 780.00 --> + 0.3 11:08
<eminitrader> thx RD ..that correlation helps...last one ...r we talking abt the same direction on all three
<ItalianSharp> pat: the fact i had to re-enter 4 times probably has to do with my stops being very tight...right now i am "testing" 8 tick stops
<NihabaAshi>  Exited all ER2 Long @ 780.20 --> 0 11:09

Traders Accounting

As traders we must treat our trading like a business if we are to succeed as traders and as a business. Therefore, waiting till the last few weeks March to prepare for April's taxes is not good for your trading and could put extra stress on your trading during tax month or the months that follow if your one of those traders that filed an extension.. Therefore, its best to be on top of your taxes throughout the year and Traders Accounting is a great resource for such especially if you want to prevent penalties or an audit several years from now.

<pat255> kty
<ItalianSharp> however, being a momentum trader, i figured its not worth it to lose more than 8 ticks if you are looking for momentum...hell, if the market retraces against me by 8 ticks from my entry point, i probably didnt catch the right momentum
<PapaJon> pat... you have to do stats on your style of trading... the stops that IS uses may or may not be usable with your strategies...11:10
<eminitrader> shld have revresed that trade :))
very true pj
<ItalianSharp> i know my stop management is not "ideal" as with more patience and better tolerance i could do better, however i am trying to keep losers as small as possible
<PapaJon> It is best to create a spreadsheet and record all your possible trades showing the max stop hit (or may have hit) over a long period of time
<ItalianSharp> papjon: very true11:11
<PapaJon> i record possible targets 1,2,3 and possible stops hit
<eminitrader> me and a friend kinda trade the same method...his stops are larger than mine...and he has lot more trades than me...
<ItalianSharp> in fact, i based my 8 tick fixed stop on research of my trades and figured its a good fit for my R:R ratios
<PapaJon> then create a calx sheet to analyze it
<eminitrader> but the set-ups r the same...
<ItalianSharp> emini: if his stops are larger, how can he trade more than you?11:12

i would think of the opposite
<PapaJon> what is interesting.. is that i tend to use t/a for stops...
and my win/loss ratio is approx 90%... then
<pat255> t/a?
<PapaJon> i did a study to see what would happen if my stop was a fixed number
tech analysis
<pat255> k..11:13

ty
<NihabaAshi>  Shorts ER2 @ 779.90 -> medium size
<PapaJon> the reason to did the study to compare is
<eminitrader> IS its cause i'm more conservative on my entries given my stops and miss some set-ups ...let me put it this way ...he's more aggressive
<RussellDaytrade> EM, yes, generally, though there is always a bit of 'lag' or 'lead' in one or another, from day-to-day, they alternate, guess thats a nuance, though some days the deviations between them are really noteworthy.
<PapaJon> because many many times... i picked the right trade only to see my stop hit then price turn and go to my pt1 and pt2
<NihabaAshi>  Covered 2/3 ER2 Short @ 779.60 --> + 0.3 11:14
<ItalianSharp> emini: are your stops based on technical points or do you have a max amount of ticks you are allowed to lose?
<RussellDaytrade>  Long ER2 @ 779.7 «« paper »»
<eminitrader> both IS ..thats what limits my trades...
<venedom> PJ when you say your stop is fixed at 8 do you trail it or its either target or loss?11:15
<eminitrader> but when i get entries its usually on good size
<NihabaAshi>  Covered ER2 Short @ 779.60 --> + 0.3

Holding a few remainders
<PapaJon> here are a couple examples of how dif stops would affect one of my strats...11:16
<NihabaAshi>  Covered ER2 Short @ 779.50 --> + 0.4
<PapaJon> http://www.veritashomeinspection.com/pj1 .jpg
<NihabaAshi> Holding 1 contract remainder
<PapaJon> http://www.veritashomeinspection.com/pj2 .jpg
<eminitrader>  Covered Remainder ES Short @ 1421 --> + 3
<ItalianSharp> emini: i believe trading is all about losing small and winning bigger...you can have 10 signals per day and perhaps 8 of them dont fit into your R:R parameters...its about discipline to be able to stay focused and take what's convenient for you...and as you said, if the money you make is not enough or you'd like more frequency, you can still compensate via position sizing11:17
<eminitrader> exactly...
<PapaJon> yep.. true IS
<ItalianSharp> papa: 80+% of winners is INSANE...you should be a millionaire already!11:18
<eminitrader> this thinking also helped change my trading results to an large extent
<PapaJon> hehe.. well... this is just a study..11:19
<NihabaAshi>  Covered Remainder ER2 Short @ 779.50 --> + 0.4
Ooopps
<PapaJon> it is impossible to take all these trades live
<NihabaAshi>  Covered Remainder ER2 Short @ 778.50 --> + 1.4
<pat255> vn niha ...11:20
<PapaJon> in all fairness ... i give credit to these results to Niha.. and what i have learned from him.
<NihabaAshi>  Shorts ER2 @ 777.40 -> small size 11:21

Covered 1/3 ER2 Short @ 777.10 --> + 0.3

This thing is slowly trying to put in a support :(11:25
<ItalianSharp> niha, according to my charts we are right on support right now
if breaks down here, it could very well go to 775.5011:26

ty all..
<NihabaAshi> I'm looking for a little support to produce a 5 tick bounce at the minimum.11:57
Long ER2 @ 774.90 -> small size 11:58
Not much support here but it may be good enough.11:59
:(
Long ER2 @ 775.50 -> Add 12:00
That ADD was accidental and because of such...
It is my last trade of the day.
Exited 1/3 ER2 Long @ 775.60 --> + 0.1 12:03
Exited 1/3 ER2 Long @ 775.60 --> + 0.7
Exited Remainder ER2 Long @ 775.70 --> + 0.8 12:04
Part of today's trading plan was that I would "stop trading" after two trade entry errors.
Prior trade was a late entry and most recent trade I ADDED a contract when I wanted to EXIT a contract.12:05
Could be the medication :)

<PapaJon> RD.. do you use MP charting?
<RussellDaytrade> no PJ, using IB platform charts, (don't believe they have the MP feature, don't really know though), and more recently also have Tradestation, which does have T&S13:51

is that MP kinda another way of viewing VWAP?13:52
<PapaJon> gotcha

thats the upper value line13:57
<Chilly> RD .. do you use IB for charting and trade execution at same time?14:00
<RussellDaytrade> no Chilly, seen that feature, 'Cahrttrader', enabled it once to have a look-see, wanted to stick with what i am more accustomed to, slick feature though, can be handy if all you wanna look at is just the chart, etc.14:02
ok, back, PJ, had a friend of GF's just say hi, thats a whole new way of analysis for me, i see the lines14:03
<PapaJon> is new to me too... just starting to learn it14:04
<Chilly> wondering if one can use IB TWS on 1 machine and IB charts on a 2nd machine .. I don't think so14:05
<PapaJon> not without two accounts14:06
<Chilly> right thanks PJ
<PapaJon> yw
<RussellDaytrade> they will only aloow one account to be open at once, (though you can open a demo atached to a real account and do it that-a-way.
<Chilly> I'm looking for a new charting program to go with E-signal ... any thoughts .. anybody14:07
<PapaJon> along side of esignal or using esignal data?14:08
or both
<Chilly> that works with esig data feed
<PapaJon> gotcha14:09
theres Linnsoft RT, MarketDelta RT, Ensign
Market Delta RT is a branch of the linnsoft program
<RussellDaytrade> shorts getting roasted on the open -fire
<PapaJon> have heard lots of good stuff bout linnsoft14:10
but for my candlstick charts.. i prefer esignals adv. charts
<Chilly> will check, thanks .. think jperl uses ensign and I'm looking at that

so you like esig advanced?
<PapaJon> i also run the market delta rt along side14:11
yes
am very used to it
<RussellDaytrade> model sez 779 in 45 minutes, but who the heck would believe it?
<PapaJon> have all my tools assigned to key commands.. am quick at getting around
<Chilly> I would have to upgrade from esig basic to premiere .. worth it for good charts14:13
<PapaJon> depends on what you want i guess
esignal kinda has steep learning curve.. but i have also found that most others do too14:14
<Chilly> yes, I was very used to my old charting program too .. now facing a learning curve :(14:15
<PapaJon> i have tried several programs.. and have found that esignal and tradestation are the least buggy
but there are several that i have not tried.. such as cqg...
which is spose to be great program.. but extremely expensive14:16
<Chilly> oh, I'm looking to keep costs down
<PapaJon> yep.. find a balance14:17

Go to the Google search window below and type in "volatility analysis" site:thestrategylab.com (exactly as I typed it including the quotation marks) and you will find everything associated with those key words that were used by any member of  #FuturesTrades.
